A dedicated EV charger is the safest and most convenient way to charge an electric car at home or work. Most London homes are best suited to a 7kW charger, which typically adds around 20 to 30 miles of range per hour of charging depending on the car. Polarity Electrics is an OZEV-approved installer and NICEIC Approved Contractor, so your charge point is designed, installed, tested and certified properly, and you can check whether you are eligible for a government grant.
Why use a dedicated EV charger?
Charging from a standard 13A socket with a portable lead is slow and puts a sustained heavy load on a circuit that was never designed for it, often for many hours at a time. A dedicated charge point is wired on its own circuit with appropriate protection, charges much faster, and lets you schedule charging to off-peak tariffs. Charge points installed in homes and workplaces in Great Britain must also meet the Electric Vehicles (Smart Charge Points) Regulations 2021, so new installations are smart-enabled.
7kW or 22kW?
7kW chargers
A 7kW charger runs on a standard single-phase supply, which is what almost all homes have. It is enough to fully charge most cars overnight and is the usual choice for houses and flats with off-street parking.
22kW chargers
A 22kW charger needs a three-phase supply. Three-phase is uncommon in homes but is often available in commercial premises, so 22kW units are popular for workplaces, car parks and fleets. Not every car can accept 22kW on AC charging, so we check your vehicle and supply before recommending one.
Where can a charger be installed?
You will normally need off-street parking, such as a driveway, garage or private parking bay, so the charging cable does not cross a public pavement. The charger is usually mounted on an outside wall close to where you park, or on a post if the parking space is away from the building. In flats and shared car parks, you will need permission from the freeholder or managing agent, and the supply may come from your own meter or a landlord supply. We look at the route from your consumer unit to the charger during the survey, as this has the biggest effect on the work involved.
What's included
- A pre-installation survey of your supply, main fuse, earthing arrangement and consumer unit
- A maximum demand assessment to confirm your supply can take the extra load, with load management where needed
- Supply and installation of a smart charger from a reputable manufacturer, or fitting a unit you have already bought where suitable
- A dedicated circuit with the correct cable, RCD protection and earthing arrangement for EV charging
- Wall mounting on the house or a post installation for driveways
- Commissioning, app setup and a walkthrough of scheduling and off-peak charging
- An Electrical Installation Certificate, building control notification under Part P, and notification to the distribution network operator
Where the existing consumer unit has no space or does not meet current standards, we can include a consumer unit replacement in the same visit.
OZEV grants
The Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) runs grant schemes towards charge point installation for eligible flat owners, renters and landlords, as well as some businesses. Grant amounts and eligibility rules change, so please check GOV.UK for the current scheme before you book. As an OZEV-approved installer we can advise whether your property is likely to qualify and handle the claim process where it applies.
EV charger installation pricing
We give a fixed written quote after a survey, which can often be done from photos. The figures below are typical London market ranges, before any grant, rather than our published prices:
| Installation | Typical London market range |
|---|---|
| Standard 7kW home charger, short cable run | £900 – £1,300 |
| 7kW charger with longer run or groundwork | £1,200 – £1,800+ |
| 22kW three-phase commercial charger | £1,500 – £3,000+ per unit |
The price depends on the charger model, the distance between the consumer unit and the parking space, whether cables need to run underground or through walls, and whether the consumer unit or supply needs upgrading.
How the process works
- Survey – send photos of your meter, consumer unit and parking area, or book a visit.
- Fixed written quote – including charger options and any grant eligibility.
- Network checks – we handle notification to, or approval from, the network operator as required.
- Installation – most home installations are completed in a single day.
- Testing and commissioning – the circuit is tested and the charger connected to its app.
- Certification – you receive your certificate and handover documents.
Charging for landlords, flats and businesses
Landlords and managing agents can add chargers for tenants, and businesses can install workplace chargers for staff, visitors or fleet vehicles. For multi-unit sites we can design load-managed systems so several chargers share the available supply. If you also need an inspection of the wider installation, see our commercial EICR service. Before a large installation, a periodic EICR can confirm the existing installation is in good order.

Frequently asked questions
Should I choose a 7kW or 22kW charger?
Most homes have a single-phase supply, so a 7kW charger is the right choice. A 22kW charger needs a three-phase supply and a car that can accept it, so it is mainly used in commercial premises.
Can I get a grant for an EV charger?
OZEV grants are available for eligible flat owners, renters, landlords and some businesses. Amounts and rules change, so check GOV.UK for the current scheme; as an OZEV-approved installer we can advise on eligibility.
How long does an EV charger installation take?
Most home installations are completed in a single day. Longer cable runs, groundwork or a consumer unit upgrade can add time, which we confirm in the quote.
Do I need to upgrade my fuse box for an EV charger?
Not always. We check your consumer unit, earthing and maximum demand during the survey and only recommend an upgrade where it is needed for a safe, compliant installation.
How much does EV charger installation cost in London?
Typical London market ranges for a standard 7kW home charger are around £900 to £1,300 before any grant. We give a fixed written quote after a survey.
Can you install a charger I have already bought?
Often yes, provided it is a suitable, compliant smart charger. Let us know the model when you request a quote.
